I’ve been looking forward to these Wednesday columns since I started the blog several months ago. Starting next week, I’ll give score predictions for every NFL game that week along with a comment of what I expect to happen.
But fortunately part II of the Wednesday column starts officially this week. It’s college football time (finally)!
Four of us will offer score predictions on the ASU & UofA weekly matchups plus the other big games in college football.
We’ll track these picks straight up and against the spread each week to see who is crowned the Cohen’s Corner CFB Picks Champion in 2017!
Introducing the other panelists:
Jon Bell: A Wisconsin alum and San Diego resident, JB is a diehard Badgers fan and seemingly gets the best of me more often than not on Twitter when it comes to predicting CFB games. He also holds the claim to fame of being at the first “Jump Around” game (such an awesome tradition as well) in Madison…vs. Drew Brees and Purdue in October 1998.
Steve Malina: A frequent commenter on this blog, Steve is a passionate UofA fan like me whose season tickets are directly behind mine at Arizona Stadium. It will be interesting to see who is more of a Wildcats homer this year between the two of us.
Each week I’m planning on choosing a guest picker to compete with Jon, Steve and me. This week it’s my fellow UofA alum and Valley sports radio personality, Adam Green. He’s an expert on the Arizona Cardinals but does he know his college football?
Though last week’s games don’t count in the official standings (since it was only me picking), I went 5-0 straight up and 2-2 against the spread (ATS).

This Week’s Bold Prediction:
EC: Florida State doesn’t beat Alabama but keeps the game very tight into the mid-4th quarter unlike USC did in last year’s opener.
JB: Aside from Harbaugh’s young team making the championship in his third season, no teams go undefeated in 2017 and at least one 2 loss team makes the playoffs.
SM: Illinois’ season gets off to a miserable start; Ball State upsets them in Champaign.
AG: The uniform combination in Michigan/Florida will lead to people destroying their TVs (that is, if their eyes don’t mercifully shut down first).

A few thoughts on this week’s picks:
-It’s funny how Steve and Adam had the EXACT same score for ASU-NMSU…what are the chances?
-As much of a UofA diehard as I am, I see NAU putting up a bit of a challenge. I don’t remember a RichRod team firing on all cylinders in their first game. The game will be closer at halftime than most expect.
-I think Colorado will be the Pac-12’s major disappointment this season…so much so that coach Mike McIntyre will be on the hot seat at season’s end. The way CSU’s offense looked last week…watch out Buffs.
-Which Iowa team shows up against Wyoming? This game is a great measuring stick for both teams including my projected Mountain West champions and their highly touted QB, Josh Allen.
-I have no idea what to make of Michigan-Florida but it would be fun to see JB’s national championship game runner-up go down in flames this early.
-Florida State, on the other hand, gets a mulligan as long as they don’t get blown out by the Crimson Tide.
-The BYU-LSU game was moved to New Orleans…good luck keeping that one close, Cougs, in a virtual home game for the Tigers.
-The two Sunday games are fascinating to me. The battle of the Virginias (somewhat) is a true toss-up. Why are the Hokies giving 5 points despite starting a QB who’s never seen a live college football field? And I can promise you that the losing coach of the A&M-UCLA matchup won’t want to read anything in the media next week. Both coaches are already squarely on the hot seat.
-I don’t think much of Georgia Tech, and virtual home game or not (in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Tennessee will be one of my best bets of the week in Friday’s column.
